The Great Resignation and Canada Immigration: Ideas

Many news outlets and online media are now talking about the matter of employees resigning from their jobs to seek greener pastures abroad. I was initially unconcerned about it but later on decided to make some few comments. Before I start, I would like to say; these African emigrants should be termed “The Great Helpers” and be in fact given huge recognitions and accolades when they decide to relocate abroad because they deserve it and more. The countries they leave should also appreciate their kind gestures and make the processes of migration easier for these sets of people and I would tell you why…

The countries they leave should also appreciate their kind gestures and make the processes of migration easier for these sets of people and I would tell you why.
The Massive Outcry
I get pissed off when I see and read articles written by Africans or for Africa that make some unpleasant comments in favor of the country; spilling out some derogatoriness like the ‘Brain drain’ among others. I, for a person, would like to state that no or less brain drain is happening than purported. In fact, now there should be other employee centered terminologies like ‘Brain Shift’ or ‘The Better Reshuffle’. Hear me out first before you cast your fingers and you may understand where I am coming from and even support my thinking. Any which way, it is all about perspectives and you are free to own your own.
Some Disclaimers
Shifting away from thinking solely about the country, we should take a step further to look at this in light of the employees and other sideliners. Africa, particularly, has a thriving population. I don’t know if you are aware. Nigeria, for instance, boosts of 206 million population and counting as of year 2020 according to the World Bank out of which more percentage happens to be the youth. As this is a blessing on its own, it happens to be a con in other ways. How? Simple. Over 40 million youths and counting are left unemployed as of the same year 2020. What does that mean? No or less professional career path for the vast majority of them, unfavorable standards of living and high poverty rates amongst these sects.More room for unemployed
Our “Great Helpers” offer a solution that even the government can’t solve alone which is international relocation. The old in the workforce willingly clearing the path for the new and younger generation to take the baton. I know you may be saying that those leaving too are mostly youths but take a look at the statistics and you would get a clearer picture. News articles always have catchy headlines like “JAPA: Thousands of Nigerians are leaving the country…”. You have it there, only some thousands are leaving, there still lies millions of youths fixed in the country who can’t or won’t leave for their own reasons. I have met plenty of them who would like to stay back and fix the country whom I just love and others do not have their way out just yet. In all, the exit can’t, and in my own opinion, won’t ever equal the retained.
On the Reverse Side
Taking Canada has a case study, do you know that the country relies on immigration to service its retiring and dying population? Are you aware that the average fertility rate in that country is 1.47 births per woman in 2019 as opposed 5.32 births per woman for Nigeria in the same year? What does these imply? It would be injustice to restrict our “Great Helpers” the avenue to aid a fellow country from its population crisis. Come to think of it, Canada, for instance, invites just few thousands of Nigerians and even Africans yearly to immigrate to their country with unarguably better standards of living and salaries. I would say that is a fair price to pay such “Great Helpers” to come fix their country since it is a fact that leaving one’s own country isn’t always a pleasant or easy route for these people as well.In the Large Scale
Worse still, the idea of “The Great Resignation” is not unique to Africa alone. In the US, UK, even Canada and lots of other destination countries where these “Great Helpers” move to. Their own citizens and few migrating residents still leave the workforce willingly in search of a better work-life balance out of the four walls of the office moving mostly online for remote jobs or even starting their own businesses. The idea here is that many such corporations in those countries will still lose their employees to their workers’ own life journeys. At the flip side, I also know of expatriates who leave their home country initially for further studies, work or residency abroad and still come back after spending months and years in diaspora because they miss and want to be a part of such communities again. So, nothing is certain. “The Great Helpers” decide for themselves and their decisions should not be frowned out at all.
Financial Inclinations
I have talked slightly about this in a previous section. Legal immigration is not cheap, it takes so much of time, effort and money especially for Africans. So, many won’t even want to dive into it. It takes some amount of stress from either the applicant or the agent/ consultant. Many more Africans staying back at home are not willing to path with that much amount of energy and that is also fine. In fact, some have had great careers here without any hassle or corruption. Others just love the vibe that this continent gives its residents and just choose to stay back even if they have all it takes to relocate. Very few Africans that I have seen and heard of also want to just have that better life insurance, so they take on permanent residency or citizenship of another country for some time and return to their home after bagging their papers. My Final Verdict
All I am saying is that rather than casting out these “Great Helpers” using comments like “Brain Drain”, let’s focus more on how to use their decisions to better inform the countries’ leaders and appreciate those leaving by easing the relocation processes for them. Everyone wants to be happy at the end of the day. So, bloggers and analysts shouldn’t pass their biased or wrong messages to the governments of these African nations so that inhumane policies against such practice doesn’t find their way into the order of the day. Let’s see these international patriots as necessary fabric of the world than menaces.
