Linguistics Careers
Many a times when I read articles about career opportunities in the field of linguistics, there is no much accurate differences between the work you can actually do as a theoretical linguist and the ones you can most definitely benefit from as an applied linguist. So, I would like to differentiate in this post some of the jobs each of these types of linguists can venture into. To a lot of people, it seems as if this field of study is mainly pedagogic in nature but that is far from the truth. When it comes to the field of linguistics in general, that is asa theoretical linguist – you can apply for more job offers in addition to the monolingualcareers as any of the following:19. Language instructor/tutor – firstly, if you are a theoretical linguist, you best work as a language instructor or tutor in a school or institution while teaching the rudiments of a language, explaining the major components that make up a language and how best one can make use of it.
20. Linguistics lecturer – Likewise, in the university, you can also be lecturing students on their language courses and even carrying out researches in the linguistics field to help improve the pedagogy of study of the language study. Many of these lecturers soon become doctors with PhDs and professors in this field advancing the field of study with their wonderful works.
21. English Literature teacher – Literature differs from mainstream language. You can always work as a literature teacher in the schools explaining the works of great writers like Shakespeare, Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe and a host of others. You can teach subjects relating to prose, drama and poetry in a remarkable way and even work your way up to becoming a head of such department in the institutions.
22. Accent coach – I know of a person who makes good use of her linguistic knowledge to impact children and even adults alike in the perfect way to speak the English language like the Queen of England. These set of professional s focuses on the Queens English, Oral English, Diction and other phonetics-based language study.
23. Researcher – You can be a language researcher without necessarily being a language tutor, teacher or lecturer but you would have to be able to carry out quantum size and backed up researches that make you become an authority in the education scheme of things. And yes, in the digital world, you can get to that level without necessarily spending much on publishing your researches on paper.

24. Book Publisher – This is a very lucrative profession in the linguistics world. In fact, with little or no knowledge of linguistics, you can venture in it. However, it is best useful if you have a background knowledge in linguistics which would help judiciously in you knowing the art and science of language use and how exactly to better publish a book that would be in the cravings of the society. Forget not, the proofreader, editor among others are all professionals in this area as well.
Applied Linguistics Careers
Looking at the other professions in the applied linguistics department, you can function well if you have some specific additional training to your pure linguistics certification in order to get job opportunities. These trainings may be more professional courses, workshop certificates, seminars attendance certificates, online course certificates in related sub-fields. Examples of such professionals are as follows:

This is a profession that requires much expertise and training.
26. Forensic linguist – I admire this profession a lot. It involves the ability of a linguist to detect criminal offences and to run linguistic checks on a criminal based on the choice of words and even rhythm and other prosodic features of speech that can inform of the validity of a claim or the falsehood of such statements. These professionals can detect a lie, a misrepresentation in language, a bypass and so on. They are often skilled in forensics and criminology as well.27. 32. Biolinguist – I just even came across this sort of professionals myself and they seem rather interesting. They focus on the study of natural as well as human-taught communication systems in animals, compared to human language. They work with biologists and life scientist to understand the law of nature that revolves around language.
33. Geolinguist – This is also a new one to me but such experts are much more concerned with the study of the geographical distribution of languages and linguistics features. In other words, they deal with the languages in their areas and locations of usage.
34. Ethnolinguist – The study of the relationship between language and culture, and the way different ethnic groups perceive the world is the main concern of an ethnolinguist.
