All the Language Skill Tests
e-TEF Canada evaluates your actual level of knowledge and competence in general French. In respect of the immigration requirements for Canada, one must take the following tests:
 
– Compréhension écrite (Reading)
– Compréhension orale (Listening)
– Expression écrite (Writing)
– Expression orale (Speaking)
Canadian Citizenship & Quebec Immigration Requirements
In the Canadian citizenship requirement framework, one must take the following tests:
– Compréhension orale (Listening)
– Expression orale (Speaking)
 
All the tests must be taken along the same session. If the score obtained in one of the tests does not satisfy one, such person must retake the tests together. In the Quebec immigration requirement, one must take the following tests:
 
– Compréhension orale (Listening)
– Expression orale (Speaking)
– Compréhension écrite (Reading) (especially if the main claimer wishes)
– Expression écrite (Writing) (especially if the main claimer wishes)Comprehension écrite ‘Reading’
This test skill is comprised of 4 sections – 50 questions. and it last for 1 hour. the main objective is to evaluate your capacity to read and understand written documents.
The reading test comprises of 50 questions divided into:
10 questions – defining the context of a document (where?, to who? when? for what reason?)
25 questions – understanding a document in detail, understanding some key informations…
10 questions – understanding the organisation and logic of a text
5 questions – understanding the general sense of a sentence
 
Type of documents – press articles, notice, graphics, classified ads, reader’s section, blank texts, texts in disorder, sentences to reformulate.
Remaining time:
The remaining time for the test is shown on top at the right of the screen. When the test time is gone, the computer automatically saves your responses. Take note: the button ‘End the test’ (‘Terminer l’épreuve’) will appear when you have run through all the questions. If you click on this button, it will not be possible to come back on the test to change your response. 
Compréhension Orale (Listening)
This test skill comprises of 4 sections which has 60 questions. It lasts for 40 minutes. And the main objective is to evaluate your capacity to understand spoken French while listening to oral documents.
The listening test comprises of 60 questions divided into:
8 questions – associating some illustrations to some oral messages.
26 questions – understand some short messages: general sense and context.
16 questions – understand in detail some long messages, determine some intentions and some opinions.
10 questions – recognizing and differentiating sounds.
Type of documents Dialogues, stories, descriptions, telephone messages, public announcements, extracts of radio emissions, interviews… short sentences
Each computer is provided with an individual earpiece that must be used for the listening. The oral documents is played automatically. The test starts one time, it cannot be stopped! Each question type is preceded by an instruction, written and oral, that explains the task to be done and the number of presumed listenings. Certain documents are played only once, others two times: the instruction informs you systematically. Some pauses are expected on the audio recordings to read the questions and respond.Expression Tests
Expression orale ‘speaking’ – This test has just 2 sections which lasts for 15 minutes in total (test duration). The main objective is to evaluate your capacity to communicate orally with an examiner. The two (2) activities : sect ion A and section B.
 
SECTION A      
Duration of interview: 5 minutes
Roleplay  – formal situation
Objective – Obtain some informations, gather some informations.
Progress
– subject realization: 1 minute.
– Interaction : 5 minutes.
 
SECTION B
Duration of interview: 10 minutes
Roleplay  – friendly situation
Objectives
– Present the contents of a document while using their appropriate words.
– Convince, expose your point of view et argument on the invoked sujet.
 
Progress
– subject realization: 1 minute.
– Interaction : 10 minutes.
Format of supporting documents: documents of the daily life (announcements, publicity, handbill, etc.)
Expression écrite ‘Writing’
This aspect of the test has 2 sections which is taken within just 1 hour. The main objective of this test is to evaluate your capacity to express yourself in written French. The two (2) activities : section A and section B.
 
SECTION A
Type of document: the beginning of a press article (news item rubric)
Objective: write the continuation of the article (80 words minimum)
 
SECTION B
Type of document: an extract sentence from a newspaper
Objective: to express one’s point of view and justify it (200 words minimum)
The test is evaluated by no less than two (2) human correctors of independent way which are didactic specialists of the language. They evaluate from the objective way:
 
The quality and the efficacy of produced texts:

the respect de la situation
the general organisation of the text
the clarity of the information or of the argumentation
the capacity to develop, qualify and specify one’s intentions

 
→ is the text clear, transparent, confusing, incoherent ?
→ are the information summary, vague, precise, detailed?
 
The richness and the mastery of the written French language:

the lexicon
the syntax (sentences, tenses and modes…)
the orthography

 
→ is the used lexicon just, precise, adequate?
→ are the sentences simple, complex? masters?
→ are the verb tenses et modes correctly utilised?
→ is the usual orthography mastered?
 
The correctors utilise a standardized evaluation grid. This allows to attribute, in relation to the different criteria of evaluation, a level of global performance on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ‘Cadre europeen commun de reference pour les langues’ (CEFRL/CECR). The six levels of CECR are A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2.Test Evaluation
The teachers who evaluate your written and oral expressions’ tests use a complete and precise evaluation grid. This grid is the same for all candidates. It is furthermore analyzed by the French language center. This system guarantees the same evaluation for all.
Marking Guide
The Marking guide requires candidates to respond by clicking on the chosen response. One can modify his or her response while clicking on another choice on the computer. The grid of marking has 4 (four) types of responses and marks:
– bonne reponse       + 1 point  
– pas de reponse      0 point
– mauvaise reponse        0 point    
– reponse multiple        0 point
