Not everyone knows what it takes to learn French among other languages or even how long the process can take them and that is why I feel it is quite expedient on me to write an article giving my own opinion and internationally recognized language studies approved timelines to buttress my points. We must not however neglect the fact that not everyone is equally able to learn easily and fast, yet there lies in all of us the possibility to do the considerable average and more.
My View About Language Learning
I am one person that believes in the untapped potentials of people and I have come to realize that even the considered worst student can be better and learn quickly and easily if only they are taught how well to do it. I was once very bad in learning languages especially French. Back then when I was in secondary school, I played around with my French teacher and didn’t really understand the language.

My thinking towards the language centered on the mental conviction that – èdè tí bàbá atí ìya mí ń so, tí wọ́n fi ipá kọ́ mi ‘the language that neither my father nor mother knows which is being forced on me to learn’. I saw the language as a threat to my freedom; I didn’t even probe my thinking but was really disinterested in the language and everyone that had anything to do with the language learning.This is one of the limiting beliefs that most language learners like French students have that hinder them from learning the language. In reality, what causes these beliefs is not farfetched from the lack of willingness to learn, knowledge of easy ways to learn and the number of times it takes them to learn it. According to the Foreign Service Institute US and Federal Ministry of Education France, languages like French take Anglophone speakers about 500-600 hours of learning to reach conversational competence. Now, with this relevant statistics, let us do some quick calculations to ascertain how soon and fast you can learn the French language.
Let Us Do Some Calculations
Based on the time ranges given by the two recognised bodies, you would see that learning a language like French just is a game of numbers. The more hours you put in, the more you get to learn a great deal from your studies and vice versa. You just need to plan and do the hours, make the sacrifice and keep at it with consistency.I would like to propose two (2) options to you as I do give my students and exam candidates who are learning French and preparing for internationally recognized tests like TEF Canada, DELF-DALF or TCF. These options are not to be followed so rigidly but if you disciplined yourself to go by one of them, it can really help in your language learning process.Option 1Learn French in 6 months = 24 weeks of language studies
100 hours per month (30 days) = 3 hours per day
I believe if you are a very busy person like some of my adult learners, you can always give the language studies only 3 hours of your day – maybe 9-12midnight after you come back from work or better still an hour early in the morning by 5-6am, another hour during lunch time at work maybe by 12-1pm and the last hour when you get home,have eaten and relaxed by 9-10pm as you so wish.
Option 2 To learn French in 3 months = 12 weeks of language studies
200 hours per month (30 days) = 6 hours per dayIf you are a free person or student and can squeeze out more time to learn the language, you can take 6 good hours to study, speak and use the language. This can be achieved not only be reading or listening to the language but also speaking and writing to the native speakers or language coaches around you or on the internet or even social media platforms. It all takes you to just religiously follow and use the numbers.Draw Your Own Map
